nlc.edu —  The American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) established the George Meany Memorial Archives in 1980 to honor the memory of George Meany, its first president, and to provide a program to preserve its historical records and make them available for research. In 1987 the archives moved from the AFL-CIO headquarters to the forty-seven acre campus of the George Meany Center for Labor Studies (now the National Labor College) in Silver Spring, Maryland, an educational institution for labor officers, representatives, and staff of AFL-CIO affiliates. About the Web Site This site is designed to give an overview of the records at the GMMA and its ongoing activities, as well as to provide pertinent information about its services. co-op.ac.uk —  Researching Co-operatives Co-operatives have been ‘off the radar’ for researchers for some years and there is a great need to rebuild the evidence on co‑operatives for practitioners and policy makers alike. The research team at the College carries out research into the role of co-operatives, both historical and contemporary, and works with a growing number of research partners from the co-operative movement and the higher education sector. Our aim is also to disseminate research findings on co-operatives as widely as possible. We do this by producing a range of accessible publications for wide circulation in the co-operative movement and beyond. These publications, along with a selection of our briefing papers, can be viewed and download in the Resources section of the site. Our Online Library provides a comprehensive guide to publications and electronic documents relating to co-operative research. We also present papers and other contributions on co-operatives research at conferences and other events.

infidels.org — The Secular Web is owned and operated by Internet Infidels, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization dedicated to defending and promoting a naturalistic worldview on the Internet. Naturalism is the "hypothesis that the natural world is a closed system" in the sense that "nothing that is not a part of the natural world affects it." As such, "naturalism implies that there are no supernatural entities," such as gods, angels, demons, ghosts, or other spirits, "or at least none that actually exercises its power to affect the natural world."[1] And without miraculous interventions into nature from a spiritual realm, neither prayer nor magick are more effective than a placebo. Why naturalism?

ipl.org —  ipl2 is a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment. To date, thousands of students and volunteer library and information science professionals have been involved in answering reference questions for our Ask an ipl2 Librarian service and in designing, building, creating and maintaining the ipl2's collections. It is through the efforts of these students and volunteers that the ipl2 continues to thrive to this day.   In January 2010, the website "ipl2: information you can trust" was launched, merging the collections of resources from the Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Librarians' Internet Index (LII) websites. The site is hosted by Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology, and a consortium of colleges and universities with programs in information science are involved in developing and maintaining the ipl2.   Online texts including Ballads and Lyrics of Socialism by Edith Nesbit, better known for The Railway Childre

wcml.org.uk — Working people have always struggled to get their voices heard. The Working Class Movement Library records over 200 years of organising and campaigning by ordinary men and women. Our collection provides a rich insight into working people's daily lives as well as their thoughts, hopes, fears and the roles they played in the significant events of their time. Information on:• The trades and lives of people who worked in the past - brushmakers, silk workers, tailors, boilermakers and others • Trade unions , where people have banded together to improve their working conditions • Politics and campaigns, from Chartism to the General Strike and more recent protests • Creativity and culture - drama, literature, music, art and leisure • Important people who have led activist lives • International events such as the Spanish Civil War, and aspects of Irish history Much of this information is held in books, pamphlets or leaflets.  Many more stories are told by our photos, banners and tape recordings.   Our collection captures many points of view to tell the story of Britain's working classes from the beginning of industrialisation to the present day.   Our oldest items date from the 1760s. From the 1820s we have some of the earliest trade union documents to have survived.   We have material on politics of all shades and come right up to date with the archive of Jim Allen, the Manchester-born screenwriter who worked on Coronation Street and collaborated with film director Ken Loach.

Conservation of Banners

Exhibiting the Conservation of Banners through Film

PEOPLE'S HISTORY MUSEUM

The museum is proud of its Textile Conservation Studio and the viewing window from Main Gallery Two which gives visitors the opportunity to see our Conservators in action.  Visitors inevitably only see a small portion of the process of conserving banners during their visit, since the conservation of an entire banner can take up to a year.

To provide an even better insight of what conservation entails, and what steps are taken while conserving a banner, the museum is currently producing a short documentary on banner conservation.  It will show the entire process of the conservation of the Amalgamated Stevedores Labour Protection League banner, which was probably made around 1918 to commemorate the Stevedores who lost their lives in World War I. The banner will be exhibited in our galleries in 2014, to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.  Leanne Tonkin, one of our Conservators, will be filmed during different stages of her work, helping to provide answers to frequently asked questions by visitors who have viewed conservation taking place through the viewing window.

After a few filming sessions in which Leanne was filmed carrying out her conservation work, she was interviewed in front of the camera by Exhibitions Manager, Kate Chatfield.

MIA Introduction

The Marxists Internet Archive (MIA, http://www.marxists.org/) is an all-volunteer, non-profit public library, started more than 20 years ago in 1990. In 2006, MIA averaged 1.1 million visitors per month, downloading 15.5 million files per month. This represents a 25% increase in visitors since 2005, and a 380% increase in visitors since 2000.

In 2007, MIA has 62 active volunteersfrom 33 different countries. MIA contains the writings of 592 authors representing a complete spectrum of political, philosophical, and scientific thought, generally spanning the past 200 years. MIA contains these writings in 45 different languages, comprising a total size of over 53,000 documents and 29 GB of data, all created through the work of volunteers around the world.

MIA abides by seven fundamental tenets found in our Charter: (1) We will always be 100% Free; (2) We will always be a non-profit organization; (3) We will always be based on democratic decision making; (4)We will always have full disclosure; (5) We will always remain politically independent; (6) Our priority is to provide archival information; (7) We will present content in a way that is easy to access and understand.

In 2007, we terminated our former practice of dividing all writers into Marxists and non-Marxists, and instead offer an index of Selected Marxist Writers in most language sections. The MIA aims to maintain an archive of any and all writings which are Marxist or relevant to the understanding of Marxism and can be lawfully published. In the past, some writers who have contributed to Marxism have expressed racist, sexist or other distasteful views. The MIA generally does not “filter out” such views; if we are archiving the work of a writer, any and all of that writer’s work may be included, within the limits imposed by the availability of a willing volunteer to transcribe the works and the impact of intellectual property laws. The MIA does not endorse any of the views expressed by any of the writers included here, which are provided solely for the information of the reader.
